Christmas Edition of Inspiring Cancer Advocates

Christmas Edition of Inspiring Cancer Advocates

The holiday season around Christmas is a time to spend with family and loved ones. It’s a part of the year where many people set aside their differences and celebrate each other and their lives. Christmas can be a difficult time for cancer patients, along with many survivors: they can be stuck in the hospital, under quarantine, away from their loved ones, or bending under the weight of harsh side effect management. We would like to take a moment to show our appreciation for cancer advocates and survivors who have brought joy and laughter to those who have suffered from cancer:

Smart Patients and OncoSec Medical

Smart Patients is an online platform that connects cancer patients and caregivers, allowing for an exchange of knowledge and support. Co-founded by Gilles Frydman and Roni Zeiger, MD – Google’s former chief health strategist – Smart Patients is a platform where users can share stories about their personal experiences, talk about the current leading research in the field, as well as access a library of clinical trials. By combining a message board community and archive of clinical trials, cancer affected patients, friends and family have an invaluable resource in their own home.

Cancer Advocates and the Community Approach to Fighting Cancer

Cancer is a complex public and personal issue. With so many factors increasing and decreasing cancer risk, some of the data can be both confusing and confounding. As well, cancer generally takes a period of years to develop: something that makes people less aware of the dangers. It takes a certain level of knowledge, compassion, and drive to help bridge the gap between the medical treatment of cancer, prevention, and the public. This is where the cancer advocate comes in.
